Weds 5 July we welcomed Alice Roberts and the team from Digging for Britain to check out progress on the 2023 Chapel dig and Postern Gate excavation.
Balmy weather has helped the diggers excel in revealing 5 courses of fine stonework at the previously unknown postern gate (complete with two portcullises) as well as the layout of the Royal Free Chapel – and a silver longcross coin, possibly of Henry III date (one of the many Kings and Queens that escaped the Ladybird books!)
